So my current Linksys WRT54G router died today and i need some help buying a new router. Wondering if there were any recommendations. Ive got the optus 20/40 cable plan (so not adsl 2+).
Last time i bought a billion router i didnt realise it was for adsl 2+ connection lol.. any suggestions for a cable modem?
Thanks
D-Link Have some pretty good routers, it's what I use, works a charm.

Apparently a Motorola SB5101 is a solid one, according to whirlpoolians.

Yeah I have also heard good things about D-Link
Go for one of these.

I am using SB5101, it's a recommended optus cable modem. Mine was sent by optus.

i already have a motorola modem. its the router that died. luckily my mate had a gigabyte router which works perfect. Thanks guys![]()
For future reference, typically ANY router will work with BOTH adsl and cable.
The exception to this rule is companies like Billion who make router/modem COMBINATIONS, these are usually for adsl specifically, so obviously no good for cable connections.
nukthree.
What?
Just because your router is a modem/router combo does not mean you can not use it as a router. You can no worries, you just need a cable modem or adsl modem (depending on what you need)
So if you have a billion router/modem sitting around....use it. Go into the connection settings and change it from PPPoE to DHCP.....plug the cable modem into the WAN port and bam, bobs ur uncle.
i dont think my billion adsl 2+ router would work though...instead of a WAN port its got a LINE port :S m clueless so forgive my dumbness lol
Ah sorry I should have mentioned some of the newer billion modem/routers can actually use ANY of the 4 LAN ports as a WAN port. It does it internally with software.
Just plug the cable modem into port1 and then put the connection type to DCHP or bridge, theres a few ways. Then plug computer into port 2 etc or use wireless.
well it connected and all the lights that are supposed to flash are flashing. I think im having an issue with the dns. It connects to my home network but not the internet. theres the yellow icon on my taskbar comp as well.
Im guessing this is because of the options that im not sure of. which one do i select? i have tried the last option but still didnt work. maybe i didnt do something right.

i have a DLink and havent had one problem with it for like 8 years
is it true da more routers u got da moar online u r????
get a BELKIN N+ wireless router.. stable as
Do you need wireless ability?
If not, any linksys/cisco equipment should be fine. You don't need any uber cool features on your router; as long as it has NAT/firewall/port-forwarding/DHCP you should be fine.
If you need a wireless router, then I can help you out. I've used wireless for years and have gone through MANY different types of hardware.

well the router i have atm is a billion 7300G adsl 2+ router and the issue i have now is trying to get it to work with a cable modem for my cable connection with optus.
I'm not sure what settings i need to change in order to get it to work. It also connects to my network but gives me a DNS issue when its trying to connect to the net. Ive set to obtain ips auto too..
and yes i need wireless ability to connect my laptop to the net.
On the back of your router, you should have some ports:
WAN (Internet) and maybe 4 LAN ports?
I'm assuming you've plugged your cable modem into your WAN socket? Try unplugging it and plugging it into the LAN Port #1 and running DHCP Discover on your router. Your router SHOULD share the net from Port #1 across all ports and leave the configuring up to your Modem, not your router. <--- This is the ideal solution.
Let me know how it goes.

Wow I can't stop laughing at the AIM logs. You screwed over his internet so hard to he had to sign in on his mobile?!

yep ive plugged the modem cable into port 1 and the cable from my comp into port 2 on my router. i can access the router fine but this is where i get stuck.
from the settings i can see that dhcp server is enabled but im not sure which connection type to choose from the list of options below.

PPPoE LLC I'm fair sure
But, can you plug your computer directly into the modem and access the internet? If so, you shouldn't have to configure the internet on your router; you should just plug it in and it should automatically start sending packets and be shared.
Don't do quick start, ever, lol. Try doing a manual configuration, and if there is an option for internet, just ignore it or set "from DHCP" if the option is avail.
Let me know if this is possible

I'm gonna jump in on this one.
The Billion 7300G is an ADSL2+ modem/router with a 4 port LAN switch. It doesn't have a WAN port and isn't (by default) designed to do what you're wanting it to do. It is designed to act as an all-in-one device, using ADSL as its way of routing your LAN data to the Internet.
Having said that, there are modifications you can do to switch one of those LAN ports into a WAN port. There are firmware versions for the newer Billion modems which allow EWAN, which essentially does this quite simply.
I'm unsure of whether there's a new firmware for the 7300G which allows this, but there are other ways of "hacking" the Billion to do it. Mostly through CLI.
Billion Modem / Router ==> Router -- Conversion Guide [WAN port from ADSL to Ethernet] ....
That's a guide to do it, but wasn't specifically written for the 7300 series and may not work.
OR, buy a different router that will work well. ^_^
You don't want a WAN port if he has a modem? If he can connect a device directly to his modem and access the internet, then so too his router.
If the modem is an idle device that needs to be poked with login details, that is when you *usually* need a WAN port OR you need to configure your ROUTER with ADSL/connection information as shown in the screen up top ^

i tried the above and still DNS issues. connects to home network but not the internet. yes i can plug my comp directly and it works fine but i need a wireless network. according to the router DHCP is enabled.
i updated the firmware and reset everything to factory defaults and everything connects fine but when i try to acess a website, it says i need to check my adsl line. I didnt change any settings however. so i guess thats an improvement. what needs to be done from here?
Ive got a sufboard SB5101 modem alreadyim just trying to get my 7300G router to work with it, is where im stuck.

Also according this thread i cant use my 7300G router? :S
Using a Cable Modem with an ADSL Router - Billion - DSL Hardware
im gonna try the last step in there and see what happens
Bridged IP LLC should work fine. You should try with the DCHP server off too. As it really does not need to be on, your cable modem can do all the network assigning and the 7300 can just act as a HUB/Wireless access point. Its going to take some time to play around with it but snds like ur getting there.
Talk to me on msn, this is something i havent done in a while.

*Sigh* okay.
The 7300 is an integrated ADSL modem/router. It, by design, routes and NATs between its 4 LAN ports (and WLAN) to its WAN port. Its WAN port is the 'LINE' port and that needs to connect to a PSTN line with DSL.
Problem. You don't have DSL.
The 4 ethernet ports are actually a switch interface, meaning they are -- by default -- all assigned to one VLAN. You can consider them as one routeable interface.
Here's a scenario. Let's say you have ethernet port 1 on your Billion going to your cable modem. You have ethernet port 2 connected to your PC.
Your PC sends a packet destined for an internet address, it goes to your Billion. Your Billion says "This packet is destined for a network other than my own, I'll send it out of my WAN port like I am designed to do."
Once again, here comes that problem. There's nothing plugged into your WAN port.
And that's when you'll need to switch one of those LAN ports into a WAN port.
Having said all that, I'm not sure whether or not you can do that on a 7300G.
Should be able to simply bridge between the router and the modem...
Or even just set it up as a DHCP relay to the modem.
"It wasn't a DDOS." - xr6_turbo, on syntax[ep'] Ivoz - BC2
After thinking about this and not being so tired.
You should be able to do it with the Billion acting like a switch and not doing too much else. As long as the PC has its default gateway as the cable modem.
