Default PS3 HDD Upgrade

Has anyone upgraded their HDD on their PS3 as of yet? It looks really easy and it apparently doesn't void your warranty. Also apparently your PS3 formats the drive and installs XMB on it without any help. Can someone confirm whether this is true?

I have the 40GB Version and I wanna put a 250GB or 320GB HDD in it so I can have my whole music collection on it and not have to **** about with MP3 DVDs.

Easy as pie, just take the old one out and put the new one in, it will recognise it and format it and set it up by itself.

Doesn't void warranty either, <3 sony

Ok now gimme prices and links to buy some decent 250GB or 320GB 2.5" HDD's please.

EDIT: My asian computer homegirl around the corner only offers a crappy 200GB 2.5" for $159 not good enough imo.

They recommend you use a 5400rpm drive but people have been using 7200rpm with no problems.

250gb is the sweet spot for price/size too. 500gb is a bit exxy at the moment, just look on staticice.com.au for good prices.

depends on what you want to do with it, for playing ps3 games you wont notice any difference...

however with running linux you will notice huge improvement

If you prefer not to open up your PS3.

1. Buy a 500GB External HDD from Harvey Norman. $121 on special

2. Format to FAT32

3. Copy all your files to it

4. Plug it in and play your music

I do the external option already, but it would look nicer without an external HDD.

Fat32 has a 4GB limit on file sizes. No 1080p or 720p stuff for you.

That's weird, I have all kinds of stuff, including 4.5 gig movies on my FAT32. I wonder how that works if its only max 4 gig.
