I've been playing mario kart wii online and have noticed people have gold stering wheels next to their names, how do I aquire one of these.

Although this reply is incredibly late from the Original Post time, a Gold Wheel simply means that the user has used the Wii Wheel for a prolonged consecutive time period. In short, they've only used the Wii Wheel control scheme, and they have done so for a long time. You may also see stars next to player names as well; these indicate their average Star Rank in the Grand Prix mode.

On one final note, the colour of the bar just below a player's username indicates their region, which are tagged by the following:

Yellow: Australia/New Zealand
Blue: America
Green: Europe
Red: Japan
Black: Korea (Assumed from Mario Kart: DS, but I believe they don't even have the game yet)
