MUSIC RESOURCES
I thought I'd make this thread because music wouldn't be what is is today for me without the internet's help.
There are a myriad of sites out there that can help you discover new songs, artists and genres, expand your musical knowledge and taste and find new ways to appreciate music in general. My post will inevitably omit some genres and be biased towards others, so please contribute your own.
Soundcloud - Soundcloud
Become a fan of these guys on Facebook too - they post new tracks, album mini-mixes and cool snippets of stuff every day. Lots of useful tools for artists and producers too.Originally Posted by Wikipedia
Bandcamp - Bandcamp
If you're a solo artist or a band and you've got material you want to share or sell on the internet, check out this site. It's exceedingly easy to use and has a rapidly growing community to support it. It's also great for discovering new music.
Seek and Download - Seek and Download
A great resource for finding download links for single tracks, EPs, albums and mixes alike. Some might consider this to be a warez link but I'm listing it anyway because it indexes plenty of perfectly legal material too. What you seek (and download) is up to you.
Discogs - Discogs
Discogs lists so much vinyl and so many releases in general that it's starting to get ridiculous. Their database is amazingly up to date and is easily the most comprehensive release catalogue available on the web. Think of it as a dictionary of officially released CDs, MP3s and vinyl.Originally Posted by Wikipedia
The Hype Machine - The Hype Machine
Hypem is what's called a music blog aggregator - basically, it pulls every new track posted on any of a huge database of music blogs and displays them on its homepage. It features streamable tracks, a top 50 list, web radio, a search function (EXTREMELY useful for finding downloadable mp3s of old remixes and other tracks) and the ability to view the original blog post to find out more about the artist.
Resident Advisor - Resident Advisor
The RA podcast is always worth a listen if you're a techno fan. Keep on top of it though - old podcasts are archived after a couple of months at the most and can become hard to track down.Originally Posted by Wikipedia

A massive dance music community forum specialising in Drum & Bass and Jungle. Includes a massive forum, music store, top lists, streaming radio and news posts.
GarageBand - GarageBand
GarageBand is a site with a large searchable catalogue of independent artists ordered by genre. You can discover new tracks as well as review and purchase music directly from the website.
MetalStorm - MetalStorm
Huge community site run and maintained by metal fans. Features news, reviews, interviews and charts as well as a huge forum catering to most subgenres.
MelbShuffle - MelbShuffle
Pretty self explanatory - a webforum for people who practice or have an interest in the Melbourne Shuffle.
TripleJ - triple j
If for nothing else, triplej is excellent just for its comprehensive, frequently updated gig guide (http://triplej.yourevents.com.au/). The site also features regular news posts, interviews, streaming radio, downloadable podcasts and a list of the most played songs on the radio, as well as track lists from the week's programming. Another useful resource is the forums (ABC Message Board - triple j - Topic List). If you've heard a track that you can't find, post some info (anything at all) about it on the forums and someone will almost certainly fish it out for you.
Pitchfork - Pitchfork
Huge indie music website featuring album reviews, music news, interviews, tour information and heaps more. Their archives are extensive and the articles posted are generally of a very high standard.
Last.fm - Last.fm
Last FM seamlessly integrates music and social networking. Each track you play enriches your profile and enables the site to recommend other music that you might like. It also affects what other people listen to by recommending songs that you've played to them if they have similar taste.
MySpace - MySpace
Nearly every band has a MySpace with tracks posted on it these days. It's a great way for artists to promote their music and a great way for you to find out how they sound.
Lekkerlui.nl - lekkerlui.nl
Lekkerlui hosts around 1500 live sets from some of the world's best DJs on its own servers, but the forums are where the party really gets started. Users post scores of new sets every day under a pretty diverse set of genres - I even managed to find some old sets by SebastiAn and Simian Mobile Disco which I couldn't get on any other site. Either way, if you're into Techno, House, Trance, Minimal or Electro there will be something you'll like on this site.
LyricWiki - LyricWiki
LyricWiki is a no-frills, ad-free, user maintained and peer reviewed lyrics database. I've found it excellent for most popular lyrics as well as a fair few obscure artists, but like most lyrics sites on the net it's far from complete. It's my first choice before I resort to Google because it's easy to navigate and ad-free.
YouTube - YouTube
This might seem painfully obvious, but YouTube is a massive source of music (and the accompanying videos, of course). I've found countless tracks there that I haven't been able to find anywhere else and it's one of the first places I search now.
Google - Google
Perhaps even more painfully obvious than YouTube, but it doesn't hurt to reiterate. If you don't know the name of a song, just google a line from the lyrics and you'll find what you're after most of the time.
That's about all for now - I'll add some more as I think of them, as these are the only ones I thought of off the top of my head.
If you're having trouble finding sites/programs to actually download music (entire albums and individual songs alike) just PM me and I'll point you in the right direction.

Since I don't buy much music online I haven't really explored the iTunes store much, but I've heard it can be pretty good. Beatport is great for electronic stuff too.

Can you describe how this site works and why it's useful? As far as I can see it looks like a music downloads site, but all the album/release links seem to redirect to different websites. There are far easier ways of getting music...
cheers hucky, good idea will check them all out for sure. I can always find music i like when randomly surfing sites like this.
