Just curious to see how other members on GG have their networks setup? Do you have a dedicated firewall for your home network? Do you have a fileserver setup for everyone to access etc etc.
fuck summer
I use to have my hard drives with all my media shared via a simple belkin 4 port wireless router when everyone ran XP. Im having trouble networking between XP and 7 so I just pass the 2.5inch 500gb portable around now.

Yeah same here except I'm having troubles connecting up OSX and windows 7, they hate each other and although they do work after a lot of fiddling they're still not 100%. I did have a fileserver up until a few months which was connected to to the wireless router and the ps3 for streaming. It's down at the moment though.
Just curious for any of the network gurus out there, are there any advantages to setting up a dedicated linux firewall or something like that for home use?

Theres not really that much advantage to a linux firewall.
If you have a decent router/hardware firewall, its going to do all you need.
What is happening joeL, u been getting attacks?
Also win7 sharing is abit touchy but once you got it all sorted, it works quite well. You need to make sure all the computers with win7, see your network as a private home network and then you need to turn on file and print sharing. Then turn off password protection sharing. Then when you want to share a folder you need to right click, goto share and type "everyone" in the box and press enter. This will allow winXP and im pretty sure should help out with OSX. I prob missed something but yeh once you have win7 correctly, I know it shares just fine to XP.
I have two lappys, my main and my TV on my network. I've considered a file sever, but really theres little advantage over my main just having everything.
I recently also got new external drives. I found a ASTONE caddy for $25 with eSATA and it came with Samsung 1TBs F3 7200rpms @ $85. Anyway the eSATA is exactly the same as interal sata, so speeds have been great.
- One router, connected to 3 pc's, an xbox, a wii, and a random laptop.
- Dad's pc acts as a print server.
- My pc acts as a file server through FTP. Some of it is accessible only through the network, whereas some of it is accessible throughout the interwebz. ftp://110.175.38.228/ (I mainly use it to send files to people over msn since the msn file sending feature is slow, unreliable, and doesn't allow some filetypes.)
It's not that complex; I don't have a need for a hardware firewall or dedicated servers... would like to set one up though just for the fun of it.

Nah I'm not being attacked or anything, I just like playing around with this type of thing. It's a challenge of sorts I suppose and since I'm going to fix my fileserver today I thought I might try setting it up as a basic firewall and maybe even a squid/proxy.
Our current setup just one router connected directly to 3 PC's and a network printer, the rest of house goes off the wireless from an airport extreme station. The fileserver used to be connected to the ps3 until it died but hoping to fix that today.

Don't got the money for a home network. I just have a wireless router and a computer.
If I did have the money though, I would have Cisco switches and all![]()
FreeBSD fileserver using ZFS pooled storage.
Alix2 embedded firewall/router/Wireless AP running pfsense
Gaming machine dual booting Archlinux and XP
Macbook pro laptop
Ubuntu mythtv/XBMC media center
ps3
Most people with dedicated hardware firewalls leave it on the default setting that allows all outbound traffic. They only blocking inbound and configure port forwarding for their desired ports. Their firewall is only half configured and wont defend against trojans.

I thought about a file server as well but no need in the end
I'm interested in knowing about your ftp setup I wouldn't mind maybe seeing if I can set something like that up
I've also got a question some stuff I try to share but when I go to access it through the other pc it says denied. What I can't understand is why it only does it with some stuff? Actually I just check again and it won't let me into any of the files I share from my pc. The error message is filename is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
Not enough server storage is available to process this command.
Like wtf it use to work once upon a time now I get this shit and I'm the admin of both pcs
Yeah I'd also be interested in setting up some kind of FTP similar to yours Jam.
@ Blueprint, is your mythtv box connected to the FreeBSD server or it has it's own separate drives which media is stored on?

FileZilla - Server Download
There is better ways to do it, but this works extremely well for personal servers.

I have a File Server sitting next to the switch & router, whole house wired up in CAT6 underfloor by me
got my PC, sisters PC, HTPC in lounge room & inspiron 15 dell running round wirelessly..
fileserver is setup with win server 2003, running a domain like a school where everyones files comes to the computer they logon to...
other than the fileserver (win server) and htpc (xp)
everything else runs win7
i used to have a 24 port cisco switch that my uncle was throwing out after closing his business, realised a dlink basic gigabit switch is just as fast as the cisco for my kind of use...
so i sold the cisco on ebay for like $600
don't think there's much advantage until you get to like 15+ pc's or wanna run like PABX or some shit with your phones...

Well in my office we have 2x 2mbit/2mbit connections, however they don't work togeather, just have some computers on different lines. I thought Wireless N would be good enough for work/gaming.. but it's not, its still as shit as G. I have to run 10m network cable out to my computer every time I want to game, and I my signal constantly drops, i'm not even that far away.
This is in my office though, since I don't have a PC at home, I just have a macbook with Wireless G
MacBook lol

ADSL Modem feeding to 8 port Gigabit Switch
Wired Connections
1x Server running Windows Server 2003
- 6TB+ Movies, TV etc
- Windows file share
- ftp
- ps3 media server
- other media streaming services
- sabnzbd - use this for downloading stuff of usenet its pretty G. Automated downloads grabs what I want from RSS feeds. Repairs unpacks and stores it neatly.
1x Linux server running some other cool shit
1x My desktop PC
1x ps3 networked
1x xbox 360 networked
1x wireless AP
Wireless Connections
1x Mac desktop
3x Windows and Mac notebooks

What distro do you run for your linux server Ghosty and what do you mainly use it for? I've got an ubuntu desktop setup going at the moment just playing around with samba.
fuck summer
we have a thing called cn for us![]()
Running ubuntu server on it atm. I've tried out a few others like CentOS and suse, but I quite like ubuntu it feels pretty lite if you know what i mean.
Um it runs allot of the stuff that I currently have going on my windows server plus a few other things. It's kinda been made redundant though, as the hardware on its kinda dead/dying so I built the windows box to replace it. (Only done this in the last few weeks so thats why I listed it)
Got it running samba, ftp, vent, backups (i think its rsync), had it running a webserver for a bit, webmin, ssh, ps3 media server, xbox media streaming, sabnzbd, Configured a bunch of different CSS servers on it for when I took it to Reloaded or Valhalla. LANDC Hub is also on there for when i took it to LANs.
It was definitely fun when I set it up. Theres something about smashing commands into a terminal and watching your server go together. Definitely allot more challenge in it than the windows alternative. Hopefully yours goes together well :]

Where in Thailand do you live? I presume you are Thai nationality + speak Thai?
Is it hard to get I.T/Graphic design related jobs in Thailand, being able to only speak english?
I am just wondering as i am considering moving over there for 2 years or so...
Sorry to hijack the thread!

I run my family pc off a 4 port modem router.. then use a EoP connection through to my pc, and provide wireless access to family and friends laptops.
I have no security except for password protection for the wireless...![]()
May I ask what your server is used for, storage or?
We just have an ADSL2+ netcomm router with laptop (XP) and desktop (7) running through ethernet ports, nothing fancy - I can connect to my brothers desktop but he can't connect to mine, so we normally just share via external.
so with FTP servers, do you just have one from your ISP or?
At home its main work load is just storing and streaming files between the different PC's and ps3/xbox360 on the network. Nothing back breaking. Gets more of a work out when I take it to LAN's

If you run that server binary you will effectively be hosting the server off your own pc. ftp://externalip/ will open it in a browser, or people can use dedicated ftp clients.
If you only want it internally just block it from the internet and use the internal ip.
