Dual HD 5770 - Good deal?

Im probs building a new computer so I am just wondering if dual HD 5770 in CF mode will do any good.

    Centrecom sells 2 5770 for i think 410.

Will these 2 cards get outdated quickly and how soon would i need to upgrade the gpu's?

keep in mind 5770 supports dx11

    Thank youu!

Also, Im kinda noobish at IT. Is it worth it to pay 70 bucks for the seller to put together the computer for me? Or is it easy to put it together myself?

You can put it together yourself, as long as you can use a screwdriver effectively... >.>

Get a single 5850 instead? Cost you around the same, I'm not sure what's more powerful though.

I would actually get a 5850 and then get another one later instead of 2x 5770's (which is what I'm going to do).

5850 runs anything maxed anyway, even DiRT2 which is DX11, fine. But it's up to you. It's better for future-proofing, and you still get a lot of power anyway.

Haha, thanks for the offer but Ill be fine.

Just wondering again, after many articles/threads/reviews, I am not quite sure which one performs better. The 5850 or dual 5770. Both priced the same but not sure which one to go with.

Dual 5770's is faster, but a 5850 offers the opportunity to add a second later down the line when you upgrade.

Id probably be looking at the 6xxx series later down the line tho.

I think dual 5770s for 378 is a very good deal for some awesome performance, they scale almost 100% in most tests. Thats insane.

Look forward to it mate :P. Just out of curiosity how much did you pay for everything? I'm thinking about selling my laptop for a cheap price and buying something similar to that.

    Looks good.

750w is overkill for 5770's though, you can save $50 or so by going to 600-650w.

Yeah absolutely right. The Ati recommendation for dual 5770 is:
600 Watt and two 75w 6-pin connectors for ATI CrossFireX™ technology in dual mode.

The only reason you'd go beyond 700 watts is for the radeon 5970 or if it's going to be in CF mode you'll need a minimum of 850 watts.

All other 5xxx cards below 5970 need <700 watts even in CF mode.

    ahh really? xD

A mate of mine recommended 750 incase for future upgrade

Total cost is $1667 including Windows 7. I might spend another 200 for a monitor later.

Sorry for the late reply, I was too busy assembling my comp and was so unsure about everything, but it all turned out ok except for some software problem like easytune 6 not opening etc. Took me 6 hours to assemble lol.

To steamboat: I bought everything from centrecom

I am having trouble managing the cables inside the case and the power supply isnt modular so its really a pain..

Big thanks to Jam0864 for he superb expertise in computer hardware.

Going for the i5 saved me a hundred bucks and it was a good choice since it can overclock higher than the phenom 965.

Thanks to all who helped out!!!

Problem again, CSS wont run. It says 'preparing to launch counter strike: source' then minimizes and nothing happens. Is it driver issue? Plus im not sure the new catalyst driver comes with directx.

If so, my soundcard drivers stuffed up my css, until they released the official w7 ones, or the patched up beta ones.

    You still need drivers.

Try redownloading css as well, might have got a bit fucked up on the way.

The same issue happened to me when i installed windows 7. I had my css saved on an external harddrvied (backed up) but had to re-download it as the issue you are having was happening to me. I ended up re-downloading it once or twice then it worked fine.

So i have download directx thingo from this site

    Download DirectX 11 For Windows 7 ( DirectX3D 11)

when i install it extract all these files and i click on setup. It doesn these copying files and says the components are now ready to be use.

When i try COD4 it says detected issue with directx

    =SSS

    Solved.

It seems like i downloaded and installed the wrong video driver.

    ATI Catalyst™ Display Driver for Windows Vista/Windows 7 64-bit - Motherboard/IGP Driver

    instead of

    ATI Catalyst™ Display Driver for Windows Vista/Windows 7 64-bit

Now both games work and im gonna finally test out these gpus =DDD

    problem solved!

It was the Video card driver that causes it not to work. I installed

    ATI Catalyst™ Display Driver for Windows Vista/Windows 7 64-bit - motherboard/IGP drivers

    instead of the normal one

    ATI Catalyst™ Display Driver for Windows Vista/Windows 7 64-bit.

WOW! never played CSS and COD4 maxed out and it looks absolute kick ass.. especially when COD4 is crossfire compatible.

never use drivers from windows update for GFX cards.

Always get the latest driver from their site Advanced Micro Devices Inc. or Welcome to NVIDIA - World Leader in Visual Computing Technologies

Grab the proper ones as fury said, windows update ones can be outdated, have compatibility or performance issues, doesn't allow you to tweak driver settings etc. (for all you know they might not even be running in crossfire since you don't have the drivers. )
