Sydney Slays the Dragon
By John "Voodz" Sidey
Sydney has managed to slay fellow Pan-Asian rival the Wuhan Dragon in a close encounter that came down to a decisive match in Counter-Strike: Source. The CSS team were once again challenged and showed why they are a team to be feared with a convincing win 14 rounds to 4. Coming up against the home town favorites was always going to be a big challenge at the Wuhan Optical Valley Electronic Sports Stadium which has been custom designed to host this year’s Pan-Asia Championship. Holding strong to the Aussie spirit however, Sydney have claimed the victory with a 27 points to 19 victory setting them up for an almost certain position in the finals.
The match opened with a whitewash in the Dead or Alive 4 Female contest with newcomer Eileen "original nickname Eileen" Bell defeating Wuhans Yue "Catpower" Chen 5 rounds to 0. The convincing win set up the dream start for the international visitors and showed to the world that Vanessa may in fact have an Australian rival breathing down her neck very soon.
The Female DOA was followed by an absolute cracker of a game in the DOA Mens competition. Daniel "Berzerk!" Chlebowczyk was keen to amend his loss to the Swords star Tetra with a victory over Wuhan’s Tao "Kindfox" Zhu. The game was about as close as you could ask for with fans lapping up the action. Berzerk managed to score an early lead but a cool, calm and collected Kindfox managed to pull the scores back to 4 rounds each. The deciding round was intense, both players being cautious and vying for the win, with nerves visible on both players and their respective team mates. Kindfox however showed nerves of steel to snatch the victory 5 rounds to 4 leaving Berzerk to rue what might have been.
Wuhan were pumped after the DOA Mens narrow comeback and Jun "SkylinE" Li was keen to make Harout "Haroutig10" Atachparian pay like he did at the 2007 Pan-Asia Championship. Harry however was not perturbed by last years performance and came out firing. Both players traded goals for a while before SkylinE was able to open up a hole in Harry's defence close the final siren. The heartbreaking goal gave Wuhan the advantage with 4 goals to 3. When the final siren sounded the bitter taste of defeat was visible on Harry's face, but an admirable performance kept the damage to a minimum. Wuhan however, were on a roll.
The Wuhan Forza 2 racers came into their race with heads held high on the back of two close victories by their team mates. After the 2007 championships where James "Cam" Davey and Dale "Morpo" Baker dominated the competition and showed why they hold many world records, the Wuhan racers were keen to prove themselves on new game Forza to show the world they weren’t far off the pace. What they proved was amazing. Racing out of the blocks quickly they managed to get the early leg up on the Australian drivers and stayed there. Taking out first and second place eradicated any trace of a Sydney lead and put the pressure right back on the CSS team.
The final game for the match was Counter-Strike: Source. It was to be the deciding game of the round with the victor likely to claim the overall win. Sydney Underground leapt out of the blocks and never looked back. Sydney Underground captialised on their momentum from a strong win over Singapore Sword and took out the first half 7 rounds to 2. On inferno it is all about momentum and Sydney needed to start the second half strong. After dropping the first round they rallied hard with new recruit Spunj trying to make a name for himself on stage. The team as usual was loud and vocal and they rebounded hard and fast and quickly took the lead again. Not looking back they snatched the second half 7 rounds to 2 repeating their first half domination and sealing the Sydney Underground victory. Superstar player Topgun top scored both halves to show where he gets his name from pulling out some awesome clutches and aggressive pushes.
Sydney Underground have come out firing with another strong win 27 points to 19 after a comprehensive victory in CSS. Sydney are sending a loud and clear message to the rest of the world that they will be serious contenders at this year’s World Championships. If they can keep the momentum moving for the remainder of the competition, they look certain to secure an auto berth to the World’s and claim the Pan-Asia title.
The final results were:
DOA F (SYD): 5-0
DOA M (WUHAN): 4-5
FIFA (WUHAN): 3-4
FORZA2 (WUHAN): 1-6
CSS (SYD): 14-4

be good if we could get some of the demo's sometime this week hate watching the recorded cgs casts the shoutcasters always follow some guy who's clearly not getting the first pick or isn't close to the enemy at all :P
The fact flamethrowers exist proves at some point in time someone said to themselves you know what? I really want to set that guy on fire but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.
Wow didn't expect Eileen to doing that well. Awesome!
Whoever made the 'banner' thing for this article needs to really sharpen up imo, lol
