________________________________________________

[1.0] - What is mIRC?

The term 'IRC' means Internet Relay Chat, and the application commonly used to take part in this form of chat is known as mIRC. mIRC is a chat program that many gamers all over the globe use to communicate with each other. The mIRC chat system operates on a real time basis - meaning that all activities conducted on IRC happen as they occur in 'real time' as opposed to them being 'staged'. mIRC is broken up into servers - usually each server with their own particular discussion point or topic. Furthermore, these servers are broken down into what we call 'Channels'. These channels are like chat rooms, where hundreds of people can chat and communicate with each other.

In the Australian Counter Strike: Source community, we have our own IRC chat server and system that we share and use every day. This server is called 'GameSurge', and most teams in the Australian CSS Community can be found with their own individual channel. The benefit of teams having their own channel, is that communication lines are strengthened, and matches can be organised quickly and efficiently. In addition however, most of the players in our community can be found here, IRC is a quick and easy way to get into contact with people when you need them.

[1.1] - Where can I get mIRC?

The mIRC client is a free download for anyone that wishes to use it. The download page is located on the mIRC website;

http://mirc.com/get.html

Here, you can select the download mirror that is appropriate to your location, and wait a short while as the installation file is downloaded to your computer. For the current version of mIRC (v6.3) the file that you will download is called 'mirc63.exe'.

[1.2] - How do I install the mIRC client?

Once you have completed the download of the mIRC installation file, you may then proceed to install the mIRC client on to your computer. The process is simple, and only takes a few moments depending on the speed of your computer. Simply double click the installation file, and follow the prompts as they appear - remembering to select the settings that best apply to you.

Now that the installation is complete, a file directory of where you installed the mIRC client to will appear on your desktop. If you did not chose to have a desktop icon during the installation process, simply right click on the icon in the file directory that has appeared. Then, select 'Create Shortcut' and then send it to the desktop. If you have an icon already on your desktop after the installation process, there is no need to do so. Simply close the file directory that has opened.

[2.0] - Connecting to the GameSurge IRC server.

All users on the GameSurge IRC server need to make an initial registration on the GameSurge website. It can be found at;

www.gamesurge.net

To save time however, here is the direct link to making an account;

http://www.gamesurge.net/createaccount/

Once you have accessed this page, simply fill out the fields that apply to you, and click the 'Create' button at the bottom of the page. You will then be emailed a password that you can use to authenticate on the GameSurge network. Keep this 'Auth Password' for now, you will need it later in this guide.

[2.1] - Open and Setup the mIRC Client

Firstly, you must run the mIRC client. Once the program has opened you will see a dialogue box appear with a man's face, a coloured bar and two buttons below. Every time you open your mIRC client, you must click on the button that reads 'Continue' - from here the program will move on to the next phase. As the initial dialogue box states, you have downloadd a trial version of mIRC and have 30 Days to pay the developers of the program. As time goes on, the coloured bar will shorten and begin flashing in red. Do not take notice of this, simply wait a little and the Continue button will become active for you to use.

Once you have passed the initial dialogue box, the 'mIRC Options' menu will appear. It is here that we will set up your mIRC client for the first time. Firstly, enter your name into the field required, followed by the email address you used in registering with GameSurge. Following that, enter your nickname - this is the name that you will be known as in IRC, and what other people will see you as. Below, is an 'Alternative' text box - this option is so that the mIRC client can automatically reconnect you after a problem occurs with your connection to the GameSurge server. It is not that important, and not much attention should be payed to it but unfortunately you do have to enter something there - a simple symbol before or after your usual Nickname will do.

Now, direct your cursor to the left of the Options Pannel and select the 'Servers' menu from the list on the left (located below the 'Connect' menu you were just using). This section will be used to direct your client to the GameSurge server. In the 'IRC Network' field, make the selection 'ALL'. In the 'IRC Server' field, make the selection 'GameSurge: Random Server'. Both drop down boxes are sorted in alphabetical order.

Lastly, we will set up what is called an 'Auto Idle'. This setup will allow your client to automatically join the channels that you want it to, as soon as you connect your client to the server. To do this, simply press the keyboard combination of ALT+R which will bring up a dialogue box. It is through this dialogue box that you can edit and create scripts to customise your own mIRC client and the way that it works. Now, simply copy the following text and paste it into the text field that you have opened.

Code:
on *:CONNECT: {
 if ($network = GameSurge) {
   /authserv auth <username> <password>
   //mode $me +x
   /join #chan,#chan2,#chan3,#chan4
 }
}
Thanks to Twelve-60 for this update.

NOTE: Make sure that you enter your 'AuthName' exactly the same way as you did in the Connect menu of the Options Pannel. In addition, this is where you must place your auth code that was emailed to you by GameSurge after you registered on the GameSurge website.

Now that you have set up your IRC client for connection, simply go back to the 'Connect' menu in the Options Pannel and click the 'Connect to Server' button. Once you have done this, the options menu will go away and you will be left with a white chat screen. Almost instantly, the white screen should read (in red text);

Code:
* Connecting to irc.gamesurge.net (6667)
-
 -irc.gamesurge.net- *** Looking up your hostname
-
-irc.gamesurge.net- *** Checking Ident
-
 -irc.gamesurge.net- *** No ident response
-
 -irc.gamesurge.net- *** Couldn't look up your hostname
Soon enough, your Auto Idle script will come to life as you client automatically connects to the channels indicated in that code (which can be edited at any stage. Simply change the channel names to the ones that you want).

[3.0] - Basic mIRC Commands.

mIRC functions through a series of commands that the user enters into the chat field. Here is a list of some basic, yet useful commands that you may need in the future followed by a description of their function.

/j #yourchannelhere [This command allows you to join other channels.]

/nick yournickhere [This command allows you to change your name in mIRC without having to use the Options menu.]

!users [This command allows you to see who has permissions set in the current channel, with a numerical rating of their access to administrative powers.]

!addpeon usernamehere [When you have full administrative access to a channel, this command allows you to '+Voice' another user in the current channel.]

!addop usernamehere [When you have full administrative access to a channel, this command allows you to '@Op' another user in the current channel.]

[3.1] - mIRC Administrative Ranking System.

Each channel on each IRC Server has its own owners. Channel owners are those that originally made the channel they are in. These users are automatically given administrative status which is symbolised by the @ symbol next to their name. The next users down the list are users with a priority over others for what ever reason, and their status is given to them by Channel Admins (@). Their status is symbolised by the + symbol next to their name. This status is known as a Voice.

However, there is more to the ranking system than meets the eye. The ranking system is also in a numerical format, meaning that users of a channel are placed in numerical groups. The highest ranking users are in the 400-500 category, and the lowest are in the 200-300 category. You can check which users have which permissions by simply typing the '!users' command (see above).

[3.2] - User Support on the GameSurge server.

All mIRC support can be sought out on a channel called #Gamesurge where real people talk you through your problems. The service here is fast and efficient, so if you have any troubles dont hesitate to ask them. For further help or trouble that you may encounter, Gamesurge has a pannel of mIRC experts on a channel called #Support.

Some decent alternatives to mIRC:

http://www.miranda-im.org/ (what I use - multi-protocol)

x-chat 2 for windows:

http://www.silverex.org/news/

(used to use this - I configured it to beep me when a new pug had started)

go free software!

fluent you might want to make a note about using "!uset autoinvite 1" for auto-joining multiple channels on connect to avoid the "target change too fast" issue...

The autoinvite thing makes it easier than writing in new channels though.

And btw Mustang, #Registration for new channels.

A proper guide to setting up a channel correctly would be very helpful.

There are quite a few options when setting up a channel, and there are various implcations for each option you choose.

That is to say, although he may not have meant it, this is not as dumb a question as it might 1st appear.

I can look into it and write one if everyone is happy with me doing it. Maybe even just add it to the end of this one and make it point 4.0?
