being a bricklayer might be a good job (if you like physical labour), it isn't a very good career.
You might earn decent money if you are a good bricky, thing is, you basically can't go into any other line of work without starting at the bottom, which kinda sucks given the nature of the work (and how it affects the body in the long term). I guess if you ran your own business or even subbied out and got people to work for you, you could still make money without having to put in the physical labour. Given the typical bricklayer, i wouldn't assume many would be able to run a successful bricklaying business. I would recommend being a chef and gaining some formal qualifications.

I thought Chefs get a bomb load of money.. 13hour shifts. Dog watch. Be racking up on the coin.

Chef in a hotel, my uncle did similar and ended up being manager for a couple of resorts motels etc. Good money if you don't mind putting in the hours.

All the sites I've worked on and all the brickies I've seen have major problems with their bodies at the age of 35-40, but back when they started they would have had a lot more body cringing labour than nowadays. I would take the hotel job for 5 years, get a good reputable resume then go for another restaurant that is less demanding

Dont be a brickie man, been down that road and seen way too many injuries/long term issues which ultimatley affect your standard of life.
Say you go huge and one day are making mega bucks. Still at 40 its going to hurt to get out of bed, and pain killers dont do the job after a while, trust me. Brickies are honest workers, who are building houses for Australian families. Unfortunatley they dont get the medical support that they deserve, its close to the hardest body straining employment around. Technology has progressed so far in the building industry, carpenters/roof tilers are falling less and less due to better saftey technologies, concreters now have standing levelers/concrete pumps, but it seems as though bricklaying has stayed (relativley) the same. Where are the egg heads on this one? Bloody egg heads.. I think if you stuck it out for 4 years to finish your apprentice time, you should give that time and effort justice. Just my opinion Hope you make the right choice for your own needs

take the 3rd option. get more experience and something good on resume and keep working urself up. the cons arnt to bad. you will get more money but u wont have as much time to sped with your gf, but just spend some of that money on her and make sure she knows u care about her and just need to do it.

Option 3, you won't have to to the hour drive forever. Get a year or two under your belt and you'd be able to work somewhere closer wouldn't you at a nice restaurant?
If it's full time and the money is good you could always move out.

option 3, get some more experience. i assume its decent cash and you will prob learn heaps.
if after a year or 2 you get tired of that and find you aren't moving up, im sure you can go work with ya dad for 6 months to have a bit of a rest then you can probably go looking for a new job with a much better resume than you currently have

option 3, working with your girlfriend is bad, as is working under someone you hate
career > relationship > short-term gain.

-Go to a hotel where i will be a full time chef
I was a bricky and I didn't mind it as a job but I wouldn't work for your dad, getting a blue card isn't hard at all but if you ever happen to work for some one else in the field they wont hire you, they'll hire some one who has finished their pre-apprenticeship and hire an apprentice. Stick with the qualifications you've got, chicks love a good cook as much as they love tradeys, stick to cooking. |
