It's all about the after party. I took some random that i liked to my formal. It was fun and shit but i ended up hooking up with another better looking and cooler girl (i know that sounds bad lol) at the after party and ended up going out with her for ages. Formals are more for couples and shit anyway.

It's REALLY not a big deal. Only reason you have a partner is for photos and shit. Just ask one of your female friends to go with you it gets hyped up cos of films and stuff but it's really minor, you don't even do much with them on the night.

To preface; most of the points already made in this thread are accurate, although the logic behind them is severely flawed.

To the idea that high school is superficial, this is accurate and inaccurate. It's accurate because high school is in fact superficial, but at the same time it isn't. It is dependent on a number of factors, including personality and reactivity.

In the high school hierarchy, the popular guys get with the popular girls, and it's assumed that the more attractive you are, the more popular you are. Looks don't matter. Looks are nothing but a foot in the door. It's like height in a basketball player, it gives you an advantage, but you can still be short and play in the NBA.

These people are together because they mutually share the idea that the other is higher value (Value comes in 3 forms; Survival Value, Reproductive Value and Social Value), and as a result, they perceive each other to be 'too good' for them, and therefore want to stay together because they don't believe that they'll do any better.

Expanding on this; the idea of people being higher valued (better then you) based on Money, Looks, etc. etc. Is fucking stupid. Girls work on an emotional level in contrast to Guys logical level. Looks might be all that matters for you, but for a girl, it's about the emotional journey that you lead them on. Just because a guy has those things doesn't mean that he's going to be taken positively by a girl, or be attractive to a girl. Girls DO NOT base attraction on those attributes, rather the attitude that is a byproduct of those attributes.

@slaCK: you can FB any girl that is out of your league, it is a matter of attitude, it's a matter of personality and it's a matter of experience. Having the reference points to reinforce your attitude and build your core confidence allows you to pretty much do anything. It's a belief like that that will hinder your success.

^ This, recalling my grad formal it was the most boring shit ever... After photos My gf and I had to sit with a group of ppl at this table we didn't really know none of our friends were in this group (teachers did table arrangements) and to top it off the afterparty was broken up by the cops less than an hour into it major FML moment.
