Is there anything decent out there atm?
I was thinking of getting a really good monitor but what is the general consensus?
I wouldn't mind hitting 1920 x 1080 and maybe 26" or even 30" but I've heard that too big and you have trouble focusing.
Anyway, interested in your thoughts.
I know Joel has a monster but is it good to play games on?
I currently have a 22" samsung 226bw
30" monitor - you'd have a sore neck turning your head to look around the map
I'LLSLAPYOUBITCH
My opinion - for gaming, 22"-23" monitors should be the maximum.
24 is the sweet spot.
I have an Acer 24" 2ms 1920x1200. I love it.
Obviously your ambition outweighs your talent
x2 6850's
theres a thread in the.. hardware section hybrid, check there. a few decent monitors on that thread
here : New monitor
oh wait its just a grenade..
As long as your far enough away from it you're fine. My 30" is about 60cm away from me at the moment, I'd have it further back if my desk was deeper though.
Get a 30" birdy they're just awesome, I'm using a samsung 305t at the moment and love it to bits. Even if you're not playing games on it you can fit sooo much onto the screen it's incredible. I can easily run a 720p movie while browsing the forums and having vent/steam friends visible all at the same time.
You'd probably need a new graphics card if you got a 30" though, when I run crysis or stalker at full res it looks AMAZING but my fps eats shit. If you're serious about playing competitively and all that then I wouldn't recommend getting a 30" but if you just like to play games and enjoy them then get one, you wont regret it.

So what is the best 24" monitor you can get?
What is the next best > 24" monitor you can get?
hmmm, why is it bad for you competitively though?
I love my 24" think its the best monitor ive ever used, my dad has a 30" and I personally think its way to big for gaming, keen up a 24" u wont be disappointed~
It's a pretty contentious issue as to who makes the best monitors etc. The dell ultrasharps are very good, I had 2 of them before the 30" and never had any trouble with them whatsoever.
The only thing with 30" monitors is you'll have to pay through the nose for them, you wont find a 30" monitor new for under $1500. If I had the extra money I would have got the dell 30" for it's extra inputs but the samsung has been great.
I dunno it's just a personal preference really. Also the response time of most 30" panels is quite a bit higher compared with smaller monitors. I tend to run all but a few of my games in window mode at 1920x1200 or 1680x1050, it allows me to alt+tab much quicker and I can watch movies etc while playing without the need for a second monitor.

Might I suggest the FW-900 from Sony?
Touting the title as the best gaming 24" monitor in existence, featuring incredible resolutions of up to 2304x1440 at 16:10 with deliciously vibrant and accurate colours, the legend of this CRT could be in your hands.
With the FW900 weighing in at the meagre, spine-snapping magnitude of just 95lbs, you too can harness the power of this CRT heavyweight, with the ability to turn any simple, boring, domestic dispute into a second degree murder, for just the cost of a few bucks second hand, it's perfect for those times when the silly bitch just won't put out.
With all these fantastic features and benefits, you'd have to be deemed clinically insane by a court of law, not to snap up a bargain like this; and to avoid your twenty-five to life, I guess.

95 pounds lol is that yours mittens?

do they make them new anymore though, thats the big question?
So many of the older ones are blurry now. I used to have a 21" inch Sony but it was blurry.
Tbh, I'd don't care that it weighs 50 kilos. You never move it anyway. The only thing that shits me is that 24" inches isn't 24". A lcd 24" inches is heaps bigger than the 24" CRT![]()
My Dell 2707wfp is waaayyy laggy. I'm not sure how well the newer ones fair(2708, 2709).
It's pretty snazz for anything other than competitive play.

am i right in assuming 27"
yes.

alright, so I guess there is only two questions remaining?
Is it possible to buy 24" CRT's brand new still?
What is considered to be the best 24" 1920 x 1090 competitive monitor?
I brought a 24" Benq G2412HD and it runs 1920x1080.
Great monitor overall and get for css!
I doubt it x39483984
Also note, LCD monitors are disgustingly complicated, you can't just measure its performance based on "response time" or the quality of the glossy finish around the base.
There's a huge difference between what people think is good, and what's actually good, you can't take subjective measurements, like most review sites, and pretty much every "personal" review and claim a monitor is going to be better than a different one.
Suffice to say, any LCD you buy is going to suffer from one or more of the following problems:
Ghosting
Reverse ghosting
Response times up to, like, 100x higher than claimed, depending on the colour
Input lag
Shit colours
Bad viewing angles
And obviously, the LCD is very likely to only display 60Hz, even if you can set it to 75Hz or w/e in the control panel, which, depending on your disposition, is either fine or not enough.
I might continue being mad at LCD's, we'll see how long I can go, before I get bored, or can't figure out what I'm banging on about any more. I'm not an expert on this, so don't take my word as the word of God. You should always do your own research, etc.
What I think Coffex is describing above, is called input lag.
You can note from the Dell website, that monitor has a claimed response time of 6ms or something, which should be fine for viewing.
But, in order to maximise how quickly the monitor responds, it uses a technology called "overdrive", or something, I really don't know how it works, but the result is, it gets told what it needs to display, then does some shit to figure out how to display it the fastest.
This means there's a delay between when it needs to display a new image and when it actually starts responding.
Some cool dudes on the internet measured this delay using some profesh science and it takes about 24ms, with a maximum of, like 45ms before it even starts its response time of 6ms (which is fairly misleading anyway).
That's a minimum of 30ms response for a monitor that claimed a 6ms response time :/.
We'll continue with "overdrive" for now, just 'cos I don't like it, and it's used on pretty much every monitor with a speedy response time of 5ms, 2ms, etc.
The way overdrive works, with my badly pieced together internet knowledge, is instead of having a pixel change from red to blue over 20ms with a long zap of 1 volt, it changes it over 2ms with a tiny zap of 34098239483 volts, (which is after any delay from input lag), the bad thing about this, is the pixel is likely to overshoot it's target, displaying incorrect colours for a frame or two, before the voltage can be fixed.
The result is called (well I call it this, it probably has some other name) as inverse ghosting and it looks like this:
This is a big problem with monitors that claim very small response times!

i've seen that article with that car and read over it and understand it all but I guess, only one question remains?
What is the best 24" Monitor and will I get enough of an improvement over my 22" Samsung to warrant the cost?
What are they worth these days? I paid $450 for my samsung a fair while ago.
I'm not spending $1500 but yeah, I'm thinking going from 1680 x 1050 to 1920 x 1080 will be worth it?
Are the 24" screens as quick as the 22"
Overdrive is good for response time and is not related to input lag. I believe I bought this thing when it was listed as 8ms. I'll assume they now use a different panel. There was no mention of overdrive.
But yes, Dell have had trouble in the past with horrid input lag on their 24" panels.

You can't answer this question, it's like asking what's the best car. All of them are going to have pro's and con's that can't just be dumped into "best" and "not best" categories.
Even if you had the money, would you buy a Ferrari to drive to work at Elizabeth? Sure, it's a great car, but if you can't take your eyes off it for 20 minutes before some nigger or abbo breaks in and steals all your stuff and wrecks the car, what's the point? (There's a clever, non racist analogy in here, I'm sure of it.)
I don't think so. I'm not too sure, but I don't think I've ever seen a 30" monitor with 2ms, neither a 27", it must just get more complex and stuff, the bigger it is.Are the 24" screens as quick as the 22"
While we're on the subject on response times, the manufactures claims are pretty much all rubbish.
He's a cool graph for your current "2ms Samsung 226BW"
Looking at the graph, some colours take up to 17ms to change, even with this overdrive stuff going on, then you get the overdrive failing, with this "RTC error %".
The way I think it works, is if you had a 100% RTC error for a supposed to be white pixel, you'd see a black pixel. So up to 60% is, like, a totally different colour that it's displaying. (This is the inverse ghosting stuff I was talking about.)
I thought ghosting was related to high response times and overdrive was for reducing response times and so they were related[partial of causes] DSP techniques employed to reduce the effects of ghosting?

Samsung 2443BW+ 24inch wide 5ms
I only bought that moniter recently and I had the same concern as you hybrid, that it sucks for gaming. But the response time is excellent and its a really good display. I would recommend one of those if your looking for a 24". I used to own a 22" and I think that 24" is a much better sizeHave fun deciding on what to get, choosing a moniter to buy is a bitch lol.
Depends on how much processing you're doing to determine how much to under/overvolt. I'm defining Overdrive here as simply the electrical change. Not the processing to determine by how much, because you can spend from now until the cows come home to do that.
My old Viewsonic vx922 isn't too far off feeling like my crt at 60hz, using overdrive to get there. But the colours are fking horrid. There isn't much going on in there, I'm not entirely confident they're even trying to correct overshoot. It's crude but its fast, very fast.

22" imo. I have a 24" and after a while it gets annoying. It becomes hard to concentrate on stuff.
