Default Getting good with a hero

hey i just got a question..

im pretty new to DOTA, and i was just wondering what you guys see as the best way of getting good with a hero is..

i played Rhasta, and the first time i played him was obviously quite horrid as i was too busy trying to find out what works and what doesnt..

the next game i played with him, i got about 5 kills 2 deaths, before people left the game and killed it..

after that i went on the net and got a guide, and i tried to follow it in the next game.. but, i think i was too busy trying to remember/follow exactly what they said to do, and ended up failing terribly :x

should i just do what works for me, or keep following the guide until i start to get good at what theyre telling me to do.

thanks to anybody who replies.

I think that it's important to pick a hero that suits your playing style. For example my micro isn't great, so I like heroes with passive skills who I can stack orbs on.
This means I'm not the best in PvP situations, but I can harass/deny/orbwalk and do what I need to without getting my head around microing at the same time.
To improve as a player I'll eventually have to step up and use more complicated characters (I'm actually decent with cryxalis and mortrid), but that will, like anything, require practice.

Take a look at recommended item layouts and definitely check out character guides, but beyond that it's just practice.

Dont read guides about HOW to play heros.
that will **** you up alot.
Just practice alot different builds will work against some players and wont against others its all about what the other team has and is building to, and you need to play around that.

DotA: it's not ****ing easy lol.

read guides on item builds and even which skills to level first etc.

but not HOW to play it. Grab a hero and play some AI games get use to there skills, the items builds and just generally using the hero then jump online and smash some heads.

kinda similar to CSS, ie. bot prac = smash heads online

Remember Orbs don't stack.

The game is PvP, if you're having this approach and having trouble in skirm situations, then pick a support hero (namely an INT hero).

Mortred is an aim and fire type hero, meaning when you're tanked enough, you literally point her at the enemy and they die.
Crixalis is more of an execution type hero, meaning that you have to time his moves well and execute your ulti at the right time and you'll get the best results. (E.g. Large aoe situation, blink in from the side and from start of your ult, you destroy faces. )

Layouts are not designed to carry players. Use them only as a reference point. The character guides only refer to item builds and sometimes the skill builds (remember if you don't play comp games then the outlast builds aren't necessary, because let's face it, most of us play for fun.).

And then yes, it is just practice. But choose wisely how you practice.
Examples:
- EM games.
- AP games.
- Practice with mates (or even the "m8s" in the GG community), so that you can ask questions and not cop **** for it.

Oh and something that skillz missed. Attitude. Keep positive and confident and you'll romp ****s.

That's pretty much all there is to it.

(Sorry for picking your paragraph apart sdk.)

Hero Guides are exactly that, guides, they can be great and worthless depending on the situation and whether you're playing -em :P

Play lots, with and against good people. Guides arent as horrible as most people say, some of them are a complete joke but some are good, its just that bad people will follow the guide to the letter, whereas when you're comfortable with dota (depending if you play -em or not) you'll be able to read a guide and make your own adjustments.

Most of all, if you want to get good (the same with anything else), play lots

DotaStrategy.com - DotA Allstars Portal and Strategy Guide < sign up and go to strategies and read the strats, they go through what each skill does, how they work and the synergies of the skills each hero has, as well the writer will tell you what items they recommend for their strat, everyone has a different playing style however there u will find most basic playing forms you can for every hero.

All thats involved with getting better with a hero, like anything, is PRACTICE. This can't be stressed enough. I almost played every day at a net cafe for a couple of months, with players who were better than me, so I could say that I learned at an accelerated rate... but its not only how good you are with the heros and the hotkeys and the builds.

You have to concentrate on lane control, last hitting, rune-respawn, map awareness. First few hints;
1. Runes spawn in top and bottom river randomly every two minutes, based on the ingame clock-timer. (E.G. 2,4,6,8,10 mins)
2. Neutral creeps spawn every minute
3. Creeps spawn every 30 seconds (?)
4. EM games are ****.
5. No Really, they are. Go for -ar or -sd -or -ap games.
6. Even if you're in a -ap game, -random it. You end up with 200 extra gold, and you could always potentially swap with someone on your team. If you don't swap, you'll gain experience with the hero you're playing, and the next time you play it, you'll remember and learn from your mistakes you made first time around.
7. ????
8. profit!

im just gonna throw this question in here;

one thing ive noticed when i play dota, is the fact that im always the slowest leveller. i use tele scrolls to get back to my lane quick and what not, also i keep up with eveyrbody until about level 12, then they seem to be 20 when in 15 and 25 when in 19.. and what not.

this hasnt just been a one of thing.. it happens ALL the time. i try and get in my lane as much as possible, but it seems everybody else just levels up way faster, even tho theyre constantly running all over the map.

any help would be appreciated!

thanks <3

don't spend your time on fruitless ganks, ganks are only really important if they are going to tower. Try and stick to your lane and last hit/deny and if the creeps push up to far than just go through all the neuts so that you can keep consistently leveing while others and running around the map hunting.

But at the end of the day, play as you like and if you are going to gank than make sure the rest of your team isn't ****, otherwise just pick sniper at the start of the game and watch the KS roll in.

the trick is to not go back to base, and have to waste money on a tele scroll. so get propr items and regen early. depending on what hero u are, will determine how much u should gank or stay in ur lane. u generally stay in ur lane to at least lvl 6, and if u have a hero like lion or lina, with a huge ulti and a stun, you should go after kills early before ur games over. if u have someone like silencer or a huge late game hero, should just stick to ur lane and neutrals, and let ppl come to ur lane to gank.
