You know how we get 100+ping on USA servers

Well i read the least ammount of ping we could ever get is 100 because of the speed that data travels (speed of light or w/e) e.g. us having 100 ping but the americans would have 10-20

Buttt

would this still be the case if we put a server exactly halfway between aus and usa?

wouldn't we both just ping like 50-80ish ?? (which would be somewhat playable)

No... You get 100+ ping from Routing. Light can travel aroudn the world 7 times a second.

From the London to new york stock exchanges connection it's 20 ping, and thats the ONLY example i have of a low ping long distance connection. They invested the line to buy and sell as quick as possible of course. You just need a lot of money to lay a direct line from here to there, and the only people who will do taht are the ones with enough $ to lose (stock markets).

Also, light bouncing off fibre optics (within the fibre optic tube) also slows it down a bit. Read in New Scientist that there's new technology coming out that minimises this.

Setup a server in Hawaii then!

Orbit (old mate from CoveX) is living in China and he plays on Aussie servers at a ping around 120-150. He doesnt appear to lag much either.

So if thats possible surely there are other ways out there.

When i was playing dod:s for a bit a few yrs ago our team (all being uni / unemployed late nite gamers) would sometimes play the yank dod teams, some of their teams would play us on our server with 100-130 ping most of us had 60-85 ping and it was pretty even i'd say But for the life of me i can't remember where they were based. dods a bit diff to css tho

yes and financial institutions locate themselves right next to a stock exchange to have Milli-second advantage.

ping/latency means distance and depending on how many routing hops you have to take to get to the server determines your ping. Would not work james sorry

wouldn't it also depend on location eg tas melb compared to the people higher up like qld its not a bigg diff but adds up cause my net is pretty fucked i get about 400 but still (from melb)
